NAME: Hiyori Tomoe
AGE: 19
CANON: Ensemble Stars!!
CANON POINT: Beginning of SS Finals (the night before he gives Jun the postcards)
CRAU: N/A
OTHER: N/A
SUITABILITY: As far as the sexually-charged nature of the game goes, Hiyori seems pretty in-touch with that side of himself. Both of his units cash in on sex appeal and he's never shy about fanservice, whether that means reciting flirty lines to his fans or touching his partner suggestively onstage. He's also implied to have been a bit promiscuous during his second year of high school; in one flashback, we see him casually "dating" several girls, but he claims he's just "messing around" with them and that they don't have feelings for each other. He's capable of playing the game.
Just because he's capable doesn't mean he'd want to, though, and that's where internal conflict comes in. Idols are supposed to be chaste, even ones who rely on sex appeal; being seen alone with the opposite sex is enough to get them in trouble. (The flashback scene with those girls occurred before Hiyori's career really took off; he could never get away with that sort of thing nowadays.) If Hiyori was caught sleeping around, it would disappoint his fans and tarnish Eden's reputation, and I think he'd see it as a form of betrayal. Then there's the fact that he didn't seem to enjoy his promiscuity very much; during the flashback scene where he talks about messing around with girls, he says, "it distracts me from my loneliness and boredom, but it's not truly fulfilling."
So, to summarize: he's slept around before, and he'd do it again in order to get out, but he's not going to be happy about it. I want to play him struggling with that choice.
Then there's another thing regarding "suitability" that I can't resist mentioning: during the SS arc in Enstars!!, all the idols get sent to different locations and are forced to compete for fake currency. Most of them are sent to hotels or resorts, none are allowed to leave their location, and they're forced to take orders from a shady figure named Gatekeeper. So, in other words, the SS arc of Enstars!! functions a lot like a dwrp jamjar. Since this is the canonpoint I'll be pulling Hiyori from, he'll at least be somewhat used to the setup at Golden Peacock—though he'll also be desperate to get out, since he's being taken from a crucial point in the competition.
ABILITIES: Nothing supernatural, but here are a few abilities he does have:
- Dazzling aura: Even offstage, Hiyori is great at drawing people's attention. He bursts into rooms noisily, speaking in a loud voice ("I have a large lung capacity," he boasts). His aura was described as "blindingly radiant" by another character, and on a few separate occasions, we see him distract a crowd so someone else can escape notice ("Alright, alright! Everyone's eyes on me!").
- Dazzling smile: Although Hiyori throws the occasional tantrum, he's generally upbeat and good at spreading cheer. He has a way of "dissolving gloom" (as one of his unitmates puts it), pulling people into his pace before they can focus on anything too depressing. His underclassman says that he admires Hiyori's positive attitude, and that he's been "saved countless times by that personality of his."
- Dazzling idol: Hiyori never struggles to perform as an idol. Even in his previous unit, he was recognized as highly talented and took center stage straight from the get-go. In his new unit, he mentors his underclassman, showing him the ropes and correcting his "rookie mistakes." Hiyori's skills as an idol include singing, dancing, emceeing (he hosts variety show segments often), modeling, and occasionally acting (though he's less experienced with that last one).
VICES: One obvious vice is his greed, which goes hand-in-hand with the desire to maintain his privileged status. As someone born into a noble family, Hiyori grew up with servants and never had to do much for himself. Indeed, he thinks he never should have to do anything, because it's others' job to serve him. He makes other people carry his stuff for him because he "refuses to lift anything heavier than a chopstick." At boarding school, he made his underclassman cook three meals a day for him. Hiyori won't hesitate to invoke his status to get what he wants, and he's used to living in luxury (he's very wasteful with money, and his #1 hobby is shopping.) He wants to be pampered like a princess, basically.
He also embodies the sin of pride, which likewise stems from his noble upbringing. Hiyori makes everyone do stuff for him because he refuses to "lower" himself. As the second son of the Tomoe family, he believes he should always hold his head high and never be seen in a lowly position. Even within the idol industry, Hiyori had an easy ride to the top. So being thrust into an environment where his family name and his celebrity don't hold any weight is going to shock him. It'll be a denial of everything he believes about himself, a denial of his very place in the world. He'll be angry and affronted—but he'll also want to reclaim his high status, since he hates being looked down on, and he's quite used to being spoiled. If playing in Game 52 is the only way to reclaim his status, then he might just find himself tempted.
VIRTUES: Although many of Hiyori's less-than-savory qualities trace back to his noble upbringing, so do many of his virtues. As an aristocrat, Hiyori believes in generosity and helping those in need. He has a soft spot for underdogs, and a tendency to care for the weak; you can see this in several of his relationships, from his relationship with his dog (a sickly abandoned pet he found inside a dumpster) to his relationship with his childhood friend (who hadn't been properly educated, so Hiyori taught him how to read, among other things). He has a bit of a bleeding heart, and he can't help but care about those around him, even when he doesn't want to—he makes a big show of hating Eichi Tenshouin, for example, but still expresses sincere concern for Eichi on multiple occasions.
Hiyori also possesses a strong sense of devotion: to his family, his fans, his loved ones, and his unit. As the oldest member of Eden, Hiyori considers himself something like the group's doting big brother. He loves Eden and cares for the other members, and he also cares about his fans: reading all their fan mail, remembering the things they said to him, and striving to be the very best idol he can be. Although he's lazy when it comes to carrying shopping bags or cooking meals, he does work very hard at his job, and will even go above and beyond expectations—reading every volume of manga his TV webshow is adapting (and every volume of the spinoff!) so he'll be familiar with the source material. He also goes long periods without a day off, but still shows up to jobs with a smile on his face. He's completely devoted to the whole idol thing.
And it's not hard to see why he's so devoted. To Hiyori, Eden is a second chance after things went sour in his last unit. It's a place where he can be loved in spite of his difficult personality; a place where he can feel appreciated, unlike at home, where his parents tend to focus on his older brother. (Though he's still devoted to his family, too, and seeks to better his family's reputation through his idol career.) Hiyori loves Eden, and he loves being "the idol called Hiyori Tomoe." For those reasons, he'll do whatever it takes to get home—even if it means dirtying himself.
SURVEY (IC)
â–¶ I REGULARLY MAKE NEW FRIENDS.
▷ Yep, you could say that! Since moving into the dorms, I've gotten to know lots of new people. Our industry is pretty cutthroat, so it's unreasonable to expect that everyone will get along all the time. But since we're living in the same building, we might as well have fun together. And I'm just excellent at spreading cheer and livening things up around there ♪ So, let's go with 1! Agree!
â–¶ SEEING OTHER PEOPLE CRY MAKES ME WANT TO CRY TOO.
â–· Nope, wouldn't go that far. That would just make things even gloomier! The best thing to do when someone's crying is to lighten the mood. Or leave and give them privacy, I suppose—you can't always force someone to cheer up. But there's no sense in crying along with them. That would just make my eyes all red and puffy, which isn't the best look for me, so I'll pass and give this one a 5! Disagree!
â–¶ I OFTEN MAKE A BACKUP PLAN FOR A BACKUP PLAN.
â–· Nope, that just sounds like a terrible headache. If you're looking for a schemer, that would be Ibara—he's the one who loves to plan and "strategize" like some kind of military general. But my role is to shine out there onstage, so I’ll leave all the planning and stuff up to him! Which means that’s another 5! Disagree!
â–¶ I USUALLY STAY CALM, EVEN WHEN UNDER A LOT OF PRESSURE.
â–· Yep. Cool, calm and collected, that describes me perfectly~ ♪ … I won’t say I’ve never felt pressure, but I try not to let it get to me. We in Eden have the role of distinguished protagonists, which means a lot of people are looking up to us. It's best we all move forward with our heads held high. So, 1! Agree!
â–¶ I AM VERY SENTIMENTAL.
â–· Hmm, well… maybe? There’s nothing wrong with cherishing one's memories, or one's precious friends. But "sentimental" just makes me think of someone with tears in their eyes, who can't stop reminiscing about "the good old days," and I much prefer to focus on the future. So… perhaps not, then? Let's go with something in the middle, like 3!
â–¶ EVEN A SMALL MISTAKE CAN CAUSE ME TO DOUBT MY OVERALL ABILITIES AND KNOWLEDGE.
â–· Well, I almost never make mistakes, so I'm not really sure how to answer that! But I also don't doubt myself, so I guess that's a no? It just wouldn't suit someone like me to be riddled with doubt. That's not attractive at all, you know. I'd much rather take pride in myself—that's more respectful to the fans who believe in me. And I need to set a good example for Jun-kun, so doubting myself isn't helpful at all. Another 5! Disagree!
â–¶ I AM MORE INCLINED TO FOLLOW MY HEAD THAN MY HEART.
â–· Does it have to be one or the other? If what's in my head is right, and what's in my heart is also right, then there's no problem! But if I have to choose just one, then… I guess my heart? I wasn't born to make cold calculations or run a business or anything. My talent is reaching people's hearts. Which means I have to use my heart! So… 4, I guess? Disagree!
â–¶ I AM PRONE TO WORRYING THAT THINGS WILL TAKE A TURN FOR THE WORSE.
â–· Not really. I won't say I never worry, since that's just part of being human. But since I'm someone who always comes out on top, there just isn't much for me to worry about. If someone tries to kick us out of paradise, we'll just kick back! So, that's a 4 or so. Disagree!
â–¶ I ENJOY WATCHING PEOPLE ARGUE.
â–· No, that just sounds unpleasant... Though if it's a silly sort of argument, I guess it might be fun? Some people do look cute when they get heated. I can't decide on a clear answer, but my gut feeling is "no." Let’s go with 3! Disagree!
â–¶ I TEND TO AVOID DRAWING ATTENTION TO MYSELF.
â–· Nope! That’s a 5 if I’ve ever heard one. All of us want to shine—that's our motivation as idols. But I'm the type who dazzles everywhere I go, so I couldn't avoid drawing people's eyes even if I wanted to. There's no point asking me! It'd be like asking the sun, "Have you ever tried not shining?"
â–¶ I OFTEN DO THINGS AT THE LAST POSSIBLE MOMENT.
â–· No, I wouldn’t say that at all. We do keep rather busy, especially in Eve, so there's not always much time to prepare for jobs. But that doesn't mean I show up unprepared. And if you're talking about schoolwork, I'm already done with school. So, 5! Disagree!
â–¶ I FIND IT EASY TO EMPATHIZE WITH A PERSON WHOSE EXPERIENCES ARE VERY DIFFERENT FROM MINE.
▷ Depends what you mean by "empathize," I suppose. Of course I can't understand someone who's had a hellish childhood, or whose family abandoned them. That sort of backstory isn't at all like mine. But that doesn't mean I won't sympathize. If you see someone suffering all alone in the world, it's only natural to want to help them. To shelter them, support them, and offer them love... That's exactly what it means to have a noble heart ♪ So, I'd say I agree more than disagree. Even if I can't understand someone, my generous heart won't change. Let's go with 2! Agree, mostly!
â–¶ I BECOME BORED OR LOSE INTEREST WHEN THE DISCUSSION GETS HIGHLY THEORETICAL.
â–· Pretty much! If you want to talk theory, I’d recommend striking up a conversation with Nagisa-kun. He reads books on all sorts of subjects, from religion to philosophy. I'm sure he'd be perfectly happy to talk with you about those things. But this is about me, so that’s a 1! Agree!
â–¶ I RARELY FEEL INSECURE.
â–· Yep, now you're starting to understand ♪ There's just nothing to be insecure about! I'm good-looking, successful, talented, and well-loved ♪ And I get to spend every day chasing my dreams, alongside my precious family. I couldn’t ask for anything more. Except better food in the cafeteria, but that’s not really relevant. Anyway, that’s a 1! Agree!
â–¶ I AM STILL BOTHERED BY MISTAKES I MADE A LONG TIME AGO.
â–· Nope! Like I said, I never make mistakes!
… though I do suppose there's one thing I look back on. I won't bore you with the details, but there was a time when I lost sight of myself. The memories weren't all bad, but it wasn't a good time for me. Everyone from back then has moved on, though, so there's no sense dwelling on it now.
So... maybe that's a 3 or so? But it'd be a 5 if you'd only stop bringing up dreary subjects like past mistakes! That's not what my fans want to hear about, and it's not what I want to talk about, so that's that! The end! This interview is officially over!
Regarding the spade suit, I think a suit based around "corruption of the soul" is a fun choice for him, considering he left his previous unit because "[his] soul couldn't take it anymore." He did some bad things during his time there, and he didn't like the person he was becoming. But even after leaving ex-fine and joining Eden, you can still see Hiyori has a cruel streak; when he's not filtering himself, he'll say all sorts of terrible things, from calling his underclassman a slave who exists to serve him, to telling his terminally ill frenemy that he might as well hurry up and die soon. I think Hiyori having to fight against his dark side and keep from turning into a worse version of himself could be an interesting arc for him.
The other suit I can see being a good fit would be heart. Hiyori is the most openly emotional member of Eden, and he goes through some pretty severe mood swings. When he's happy, he'll cheer and jump for joy, but when he's angry or sad, watch out, because he's about to make it someone else's problem. (Usually his underclassman, who complains about Hiyori treating him like a "stress relief outlet.") Then there's the "narcissism" side effect, which is something Hiyori already displays; he talks about how great he is all day, even claiming to be above God.
But the main reason I'm interested in the heart suit is due to the side effects involving jealousy, possessiveness, and infatuation. Hiyori can be surprisingly skeptical when it comes to romantic love—he tells his classmate that he isn't interested in a serious relationship because it seems like "too much energy," and he also doesn't see the problem with a loveless arranged marriage. If you asked him, he'd probably say that he isn't prone to things like infatuation or obsession. But if you look at Hiyori's behavior, this clearly isn't true: he gets lonely easily, he's very affectionate (sometimes suffocatingly so), and he's also extremely jealous and possessive towards Jun (his underclassman) and Nagisa (his childhood friend). He treats Jun like his property and throws tantrums when other people get too close to him, while some of his dialogue towards his childhood friend sounds borderline yandere. Hiyori is absolutely not above obsession or infatuation, and he's certainly prone to jealousy.
Basically: Hiyori already has a lot of the tendencies associated with those two activated suits. Getting the suits would exacerbate his existing flaws, but it also might force him to confront some of his issues.
RANK REQUESTS: I actually don't have strong feelings about this. If he started out with a high rank, it would allow him to function closer to how he is in canon, which would be comfortable for him and easy for me to play. But if he got knocked to the bottom of the hierarchy, that would also be fun and interesting, since it'd be a huge shock and he'd have to climb his way back up. Basically, surprise me!
SAMPLES:
1. TDM top level / Highlights include waking up in bed with his roommate, getting serenaded in an elevator, faking an angry kiss with a professional card game player, romantically (?) reuniting with his underclassman, and trading insults with the nation of Belarus.
2. Random Scenario / Choosing to use this as a sample because it shows what he's like in a professional/canon setting. Here he's filming a TV show with a fellow idol, and starts becoming interested in her personal life.
3. First Time Meme / Using this as a sample because it's a smut thread, and also because it has the distinction of being complete. Hiyori got interested in the other character because they're sheltered and lack life experience, so he decided to give them a good first date *and* a good first time.
